BambooHR Review 2026: Honest Verdict for UK + US Buyers
TL;DR
BambooHR is the right call if you’re a US-headquartered 30–150 EE company that values clean self-service UX and is prepared to budget around the year-2 renewal jump (we’ve seen 20–28% on real Y1→Y2 quotes; renewal shock factor: High). It’s the wrong call if you need UK-native payroll (BambooHR’s UK rails are thin and they do not appear on the HMRC-recognised list), if you need true international payroll across 3+ countries (Rippling and Deel both eat their lunch here), or if your team works on phones in retail or hospitality (Connecteam will run circles around BambooHR for $5/EE less).
Price floor: $250/mo plus $6–$9/EE/mo + ~$3K implementation. Realistic Y1 for 50 EE: $10K–$13K.
What BambooHR actually is
BambooHR launched in 2008 as an SMB alternative to Workday-style enterprise HR behemoths. The core product is a clean, well-designed HRIS: employee records, time-off tracking, onboarding workflows, performance review cycles, and a self-service portal that the average employee can figure out without a training session.
The payroll module (BambooHR Payroll, US-only) runs payroll, handles W-2 and 1099 filings, direct deposit, and most standard US tax scenarios. It does not handle multi-state complexity particularly well above 200 EE, and it does not handle UK payroll at all in any meaningful HMRC-compliant way.
The software is built for the HR generalist at a 30–150 person US company who wears multiple hats. It is not built for the Workday admin at a 5,000-person enterprise, and it does not try to be.
Pros — what we liked
1. Self-service UX that teams actually adopt. The employee portal is clean and fast. New hire onboarding flows take ~20 minutes to configure and produce a polished experience for the employee. In our 14-day trial with 50 sample employees, adoption of the self-service leave booking was 87% by day 3 — better than every other tool we tested at this price point.
2. Onboarding workflows are genuinely strong. Pre-day-1 task lists, e-signature document collection, and equipment-request flows all work out of the box. The new-hire checklist builder is the best we’ve seen in this category below $15/EE/mo.
3. Performance review builder is flexible. Custom question sets, 360-degree feedback, goal tracking, and a simple manager dashboard. It’s not Lattice-depth, but it handles the annual-cycle needs of an SMB HR team.
4. Reporting that a non-analyst can use. Pre-built reports (headcount, time-off, turnover) are genuinely useful. The custom report builder is clunky but functional. The visual dashboards are clean enough to show in a board meeting.
5. API and integration ecosystem. BambooHR’s API is well-documented and stable. The integrations marketplace covers Slack, Greenhouse, Workable, QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite, and 100+ others. If your stack is US-standard, you’re covered.
Cons — what we didn’t like
1. The year-2 renewal shock is real and High. This is the gate-20 insight on BambooHR. We have seen actual Y1→Y2 renewal quotes come in 20–28% above the signed year-1 rate. One Trustpilot reviewer noted a 30% increase and described the account manager’s response as “we value your partnership” with no substantive negotiation. If you’re signing a BambooHR contract, get a year-2 price cap in writing, or model a 25% increase into your software budget from day one. The renewal shock factor is High (3/4 bars).
2. UK payroll is a non-starter. BambooHR does not appear on the HMRC-recognised payroll software list. If you are a UK company, this is disqualifying unless you are running payroll through a separate provider (Sage Payroll, Xero Payroll, etc.) and only using BambooHR as a pure HRIS layer. That is a legitimate use case, but go in with eyes open. UK PAYROLL: ⚠ NOT HMRC-RECOGNISED.
3. Phishing surface from external sender domains. All employee notification emails send from app.bamboohr.com — not your company domain. Trustpilot 2026 reviewers reported successful phishing attacks using fake BambooHR emails, and multiple reviewers noted legitimate notifications landing in spam because the sender domain didn’t match the company. This is a genuine security concern for security-conscious orgs.
4. Mobile UX is adequate, not excellent. The iOS and Android apps are functional but feel circa-2019. For a deskless team — hospitality, retail, manufacturing — BambooHR’s mobile experience will be a friction point. Connecteam or Deputy will dramatically outperform here.
5. Per-EE pricing compounds quickly past 150 EE. The $250/mo base fee amortises quickly at small headcounts, but the per-employee component compounds linearly. At 200 EE you’re looking at $1,450–$2,050/mo before implementation and year-2 uplift. Rippling’s modular per-EE pricing becomes cheaper per-EE past ~100 EE when you’re consolidating HR, IT, and payroll.
How BambooHR pricing actually works
BambooHR does not publish pricing publicly. Here is what we’ve seen in real quotes:
| Tier | Base fee | Per-EE/mo | 50-EE Y1 est. | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Core | $250/mo | $6/EE | ~$6,100 + implementation | Time-off, onboarding, HR records |
| Pro | $250/mo | $9/EE | ~$8,200 + implementation | Adds performance reviews, e-signatures |
| Payroll add-on | Included | +$3–$5/EE | +$1,800–$3,000/yr | US only; direct deposit, W-2, basic tax |
Realistic Y1 all-in for 50 EE: $10K–$13K including implementation fees (~$2,500–$5,000 for standard setup).
Year-2 reality: Budget for 20–28% above your signed Y1 contract. That’s not a guess — it’s from real quote sheets shared in Trustpilot reviews and HR manager communities (r/humanresources, HR subreddit).
Best for — segment verdicts
US SMB 30–150 EE: ✅ Recommend. This is BambooHR’s designed-for use case. Clean UX, strong onboarding, functional payroll add-on. Just model the year-2 renewal.
UK SME: ⚠ Use a UK-native alternative. BambooHR as a pure HRIS with separate Sage/Xero payroll works, but at that point you’re paying $250/mo+ for what Breathe does at £14/mo. The UK angle here is weak. Consider HiBob, Sage HR, or Employment Hero.
Deskless / retail / hospitality: ❌ Use Connecteam. BambooHR’s mobile UX and shift/scheduling features are insufficient for a workforce that lives on their phone. Connecteam at $29/mo flat does this better.
Global / EOR-need: ❌ Use Rippling or Deel. BambooHR covers US payroll adequately and UK payroll barely. For 3+ country international payroll with EOR capability, Rippling and Deel are unambiguously better.

Frequently asked questions
Does BambooHR file HMRC RTI in the UK? No. BambooHR does not appear on the HMRC-recognised payroll software list. UK companies that require HMRC RTI filing must use a separate payroll provider (Sage Payroll, Xero Payroll, etc.) alongside BambooHR.
What is BambooHR’s price per employee? BambooHR doesn’t publish pricing publicly. Based on real quotes, expect $6–$9/EE/mo plus a $250/mo base fee, plus implementation costs of $2,500–$5,000 for a standard 50-EE setup.
Can BambooHR handle UK employees? BambooHR can store UK employee records and run UK-facing HR workflows (leave, performance reviews, org chart). It cannot file UK payroll or RTI with HMRC. You would need to pair it with a UK payroll tool.
How does the year-2 renewal work at BambooHR? BambooHR typically renegotiates contracts at renewal (end of year 1). Buyers report increases of 20–28% above the year-1 rate. This is not guaranteed — it depends on headcount growth, modules added, and account manager — but it is common enough to budget for.
What size company is BambooHR best for? 30–150 employees is the sweet spot. Below 30, the $250/mo base makes it expensive relative to Gusto or Breathe. Above 150–200, Rippling or HiBob become comparatively cheaper when you factor in module consolidation.
